The Nakayima Tree

An enormous fig on Mubende Hill, an active shrine to Ndahura of the Chwezi, still receiving offerings. You take your shoes off. It stands directly on the Fort Portal road and almost nobody stops.

Community-owned, community-run, and one of the finest birding walks in the country — over two hundred species in a papyrus swamp whose gate receipts built the schools around it.

Bigo bya Mugenyi — the Fort of the Stranger

Ten square kilometres of ditch and berm on the south bank of the Katonga, radiocarbon-dated to roughly AD 1300–1500. The largest pre-colonial monument in Uganda, and the material trace of the people oral tradition remembers as the Chwezi.

Mparo Royal Tombs

Omukama Chwa II Kabalega fought the British for over twenty years, was taken in 1899 and exiled to the Seychelles, and was brought home to be laid here under bark cloth. Access to the inner shrine is the kingdom's to give.

Red-pigment figures under a granite overhang near Kumi, on UNESCO's tentative list and still treated locally as a place where things are asked for. Not a monument. A site.

The three passages

Three ways to read the same country.

Eight days each — long enough that dawn and dusk are spent standing still, which is the only way birding or a shrine ever works. Every bed below is named. Start with the Chwezi Road; it is the one nobody else sells.

The Chwezi Road

Four kingdoms in eight days. Kasubi of Buganda, the Chwezi earthworks on the Katonga, Karambi of Tooro, and Kabalega under bark cloth at Mparo — the sacred spine of the Great Lakes, joined by a shrine tree almost nobody stops for.

The Rift Road

The Albertine Rift, taken for its endemics rather than its permits. Two nights at Bwindi so the Mubwindi Swamp trail gets a proper dawn, the Batwa at the forest edge, Kazinga at golden hour, and the Royal Mile on the way to the falls.

The Eastern Endemic

Uganda has exactly one endemic bird, and it lives in the flooded Teso wetlands you reach on day four. Rock art at Nyero, Elgon's caldera and the Bagisu, coffee on the slope, Karamoja, and two nights at Kidepo at the end of the road.

What's expected of you Nyero is a working spiritual site, not a monument — no touching the pigment, no climbing above the panels. In Karamoja the manyatta fee is set by the community, paid to the community, and photography is asked for, not assumed.

Fly Apoka to Entebbe and keep the day. Or drive — ten to twelve hours through Karamoja and Gulu, which is a real journey and saves the flight, but costs you a day and a half. Both are priced; toggle below.

The Hour

A gorilla permit buys you sixty minutes. Not a morning, not a day — one hour, and then you walk back out. This is the passage where we do the famous thing, and arrange the other seven days so that the hour is not the only thing you remember. Three nights at Bwindi, because one is a gamble.

Everything below, we stood in front of.

Shot on the ground by Sacred Earth. No stock, no staging, no borrowed skies. Where we haven’t been yet, we say so rather than buying a photograph of it.

Six of these are film. Uganda’s only endemic bird, the Chwezi earthworks, Kidepo and Karamoja are not here yet — those passages are sold on the strength of the guiding, and the photography follows.

Where the money lands

Two gates, not five.

The Chwezi Road passes through fewer park gates than any passage we sell, and costs less because of it. What you are paying for instead is guides, permission and time — money that reaches a person rather than a turnstile. Every quote itemises the community and conservation share as its own line.
